MEET A DESIGNER #8:

MARIUS VALAITIS

At EMKO, we believe a quality workplace inspires. We value function and comfort intertwining together to boost daily productivity. We also pursue elegant styles that enhance your interiors with an eye-catching look.

Ash writing desk 4.9, designed by Marius Valaitis, is one of such pieces, and in this article, we look into its creative backstage — together with the designer and EMKO team.

CONVENIENT WRITING DESK WITH A TWIST

The unusual name of desk 4.9 has a story to tell: it reflects the designer's desire to play with the concepts of perfection vs. flaw. For that, it's almost five, missing just a tiny bit. This translates in the angles of the desktop, which, at its end, has a "crack", a slit not just for storage but also to bring closure to the desk's core idea.

The "imperfection" aside, all the details of this piece of furniture have been made with perfect accuracy. As a result, it brings convenience and efficiency to work and adds a little bit of style.

FROM PERSONAL NEED — TO MASS PRODUCTION

As Marius recalls, the idea to create this table emerged from a personal need: “I had recently quit my job because I wanted to start my own business — to be a furniture designer. For that, I needed a desk where I could sketch, design and work. So obviously, I decided to create it myself. And that’s how the 4.9 writing desk was born.

The whole process was quite long and complicated, but I enjoyed it. I brought wood from the countryside and, with the help of one woodwork company, managed to turn it into the first prototype.

Later on, I heard about EMKO and their call for designs. So, with no further ado, I applied with my desk. And they liked it!

First, I met Aurimas — EMKO’s Head of Development. We discussed technology, materials, and opportunities to work together. Then, in one year, we launched this desk for the public, and I am glad it still finds its place in people’s homes.”

INSPIRING THE COLLABORATIVE CONCEPT OF EMKO

When we met Marius, our furniture collection was quite modest — Marius was only the second designer we discussed collaboration with,” — remembers EMKO founder Erika Markovska-Mikulskienė. “Actually, his application inspired the further concept of EMKO and encouraged us to develop more products from various designers.

A GAME-CHANGER FOR EMERGING HOME OFFICES

As EMKO Sales Executive Inga Markovska-Malinauskė notes, the 4.9 writing desk peaked during the pandemics: “Like no other piece in our collection, 4.9 writing desk increased its sales significantly. Its clear shape and function must have caught our customers’ attention, especially when planning a new workplace at home.

The 4.9 desk comes in two sizes — a compact version with one drawer and a larger desk with two drawers. The table is also available in three colors — natural, painted black or brown ash. Therefore, it suits various environments and serves different needs — from studying and working to even dining.

CURIOUS HOW SUCH DESIGNS ARE BORN?

Now, let’s take a look from the designer's perspective!

Marius, what fascinates you most about being a designer?

Freedom, independence. Being in a position where you can give the first impulse.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Every situation is unique. Sometimes there is a need for a new object, and I design it according to the technical possibilities. Sometimes the idea just pops up, and then I start developing it. Sometimes — the material itself inspires me, too.

How would you describe your personal style?

Rough style. The simpler — the better. Although that simplicity is superficial. All the complexity and hard work are in the small details.

Which aspects of design you give the highest priority to?

I focus on development and opportunities to implement the object. The technological part is fundamental.

How do you know when an object is finished and needs no additional work?

I believe perfection has no limits. I can always find what to improve — even if the product looks perfectly suitable for production.

What, according to you, is the role of collaboration in design?

Commercial design usually involves technology, production, marketing, distribution, and other processes. So, naturally, a larger team is needed to make the most of every phase. But, on the other hand, if it is a personal art project and the designer is a multi-instrumentalist, then — in theory — one person is enough, too.
